I CANNOT recommend Dr. Tulika Karan based on my experience as her patient. I ultimately changed family doctors because I felt my progressively worsening symptoms were not being adequately investigated or followed up.

Over an extended period, I repeatedly sought help for symptoms that included significant balance problems, dizziness, muscle weakness, right-sided weakness and coordination problems, tremors, headaches, vision changes, fatigue, nausea, and persistent neck and back pain. I knew something was wrong and repeatedly returned to the clinic, called, and asked for further investigation.

One of the most frustrating parts of my experience was feeling that I had to continually advocate for basic next steps. Requests for additional blood work, testing and referrals were often met with resistance or were not acted upon promptly. Emails and messages could go unanswered, and there was very little proactive follow-up. I frequently had to call the clinic multiple times or make another appointment just to try to move things forward.

I was also prescribed anti-anxiety medication rather than having the full range of my physical symptoms investigated to my satisfaction. The medication made my symptoms worse. I did not feel anxiety adequately explained what I was experiencing, and I found it extremely frustrating to feel that possibility was being emphasized while my physical symptoms continued to progress.

When I researched possible explanations for my symptoms and asked whether certain conditions or testing should be considered, I did not feel those questions were welcomed. I wasn’t expecting to diagnose myself — I was trying to advocate for myself because I was getting progressively worse and desperately wanted someone to investigate why.

I also repeatedly advocated for specialists assessments. Referrals were eventually sent, but the delay was particularly upsetting knowing that specialist wait times can already be extremely long.

Since leaving Dr. Karan’s care and finding a new physician who was willing to investigate further, I have had considerably more blood work and diagnostic imaging completed. My recent MRI of my brain and entire spine was not simply “normal.” While the brain MRI did not identify a cause such as MS, the spinal imaging identified multilevel degenerative changes, including cervical spine abnormalities that require proper clinical correlation with my symptoms. I am also now pursuing appropriate specialist assessment rather than assuming that my symptoms are anxiety-related.

What bothers me most is not that one particular diagnosis was missed. Medicine can be complicated, and symptoms can have many possible causes. My concern is the lack of curiosity, investigation, communication and follow-up I experienced while repeatedly reporting that my condition was worsening.

A patient should not have to continually call, message, book appointments and push for investigation simply to feel that someone is trying to determine what is causing significant and progressive physical symptoms.

Changing doctors was one of the best decisions I made for my care. My new physician has listened, ordered further investigations and taken my concerns seriously. I finally feel that the focus is on gathering the evidence and determining what is actually happening rather than prematurely attributing unexplained physical symptoms to anxiety.

This review reflects my personal experience as Dr. Karan’s patient. I strongly encourage anyone experiencing persistent or worsening unexplained symptoms to advocate for themselves and seek another medical opinion if they do not feel their concerns are being adequately investigated.
